Scamps - My Own

Below are my primary scamps. These are effectively miniature drafts which will help me advance throughout my project. The first eight consist of small sketches representing ideas for my front cover and back cover. Below those are four drafts for each page I will create as a final piece. These drafts will be narrowed down to two of my favourite illustrations and then drafted on a larger scale.

Song Annotation Refinement

On the post previous I annotated different sets of song lyrics. Below are lyric refinements I have made. I am doing this because I will not be illustrating all the lyrics for each song, I will only be illustrating a section of the lyrics. This selected section will demonstrate the theme of the unit, mainly related to life, death, war, or torture.

Song Annotations

For my product to work properly I will need to annotate the song lyrics for each of my chosen songs. This will help me get a better idea of what the song is about and the potential poetic meaning behind the lyrics. For my final product I have decided that I will not illustrate the entire song, but only a section of the song, this section will link to the ' Truth, Fantasy, and Fiction ' theme we have been given. These lyrics will also need to directly or indirectly link to life, death, torture, or war.

Song List

Below I have made a list of the potential song I will contain in my product. Due to the number of songs I have chosen, I will also be refining my ideas throughout this process.

This is war by Thirty Seconds To Mars mainly consists of content related to War and death. This song would be an ideal song to use to demonstrate and illustrate different matters of War, but compared to the other songs I have chosen this song does in fact fall short.

Counting Bodies, or the full name Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums by A Perfect Circle contains connotations of mainly death. This song could be illustrated in poetic way simply by following the name of the song. Although this could be expanded by annotating and drafting idea's from the songs lyrics. This would be an ideal song to use within my final product.

IV by X Japan, although not completely clear to their audience is thought to be related to the Intravenous drip. Song lyrics relate greatly to the meaning of Intravenous, something which means "within vein" or "inside the vein". The relation to this and the song lyrics is that throughout the song the lyrics " I will give it you straight from my veins " is repeated a number of time. The should, although once again not completely clear could be related to death, and torture.

Ten Thousand Fists by Disturbed, very much relates to being apart of something, for example a movement / concert /  war / group. This song talks about people standing up for what they believe in. At Disturbed's concerts, fans will raise their fists in the air when this plays to symbolize they're apart of the fan base. Although these lyrics could be based upon something completely different, and not just being apart of something.

Cradle To The Grave by Five Finger Death Punch is based upon the creation to disposal story. The journey throughout someone's life cycle. This gives a variety of connotations to death but also life. Even though this is a 'story' about being born and then dying, a deeper meaning runs through the song, saying that no matter what happens throughout life you will always be a monster. That you will be a monster from the cradle to the grave. This would be ideal to use within my final product due to the duel meaning of life and death relating to the ' Truth, Fantasy and Fiction ' them.

Youth Of The Nation by P.O.D is a song dedicated to the shootings at Santana High School. Around the same time P.O.D was planning to write a new song, the school shooting happened a few streets away from where the band were staying, and caused them to write a song very similar to the events which happened. This fact means that the song can be related to life, death but also in some respects torture. This song would be ideal to use due to the fact that related events around the song link into the unit's theme / brief.

Dance With The Devil by Breaking Benjamin was created to symbolize that anything could steal your life away, most likely a serious addictive drug, or a cold-hearted significant other. This would be Ideal to use in my final product as I could relate the illustrations to life, death, love, marriage, trust and divorce, all things related to the theme of ' Truth, Fantasy and Fiction. '

Scamps - Other Designers

These are scamp copies of illustrated Lyrics. I copies these to get a sense of how illustration was used within the creation of books based around lyric illustration and so that when I came to design my own book cover scamp's I'd be to reference back to the copies. In total there are twelve scamp copies I re-created, the original is on the left hand side, and the copy is on the right hand side.
