Final Printed Product

Below is my final product printed out and fixed together.

Final Piece - Front & Back Cover

Below is my final piece for my front and back cover. This page was created to be the cover for my illustrated lyric book. As you can see to follow suit with my influenced work by Edward Gorey and John Kenn, I have made my front and back cover a monochromatic colour scheme, with a hint of red hues.

Final Piece - Ten Thousand Fists

Below is my final piece for the song " Ten Thousand Fists " This page is apart of a double page spread which consists of another set of song lyrics. In the Disturbed song previous planning allowed me to choose the best section of lyrics for this illustration. The idea I chose for this section of lyrics was a plague doctor and other humans being hidden from the outside world and the 'plague' which follow it but also following suit and following each other and being united.

Final Piece - Youth Of The Nation

Below is my final piece for the song " Youth Of The Nation " This page is apart of a double page spread which consists of another set of song lyrics. In the P.O.D song previous planning allowed me to choose the best section of lyrics for this illustration. The idea I chose for this section of lyrics was a young person with a shadow behind them ( almost a devil of himself or a shadow ). That shadow is acting upon what the young person is thinking but not doing.

The lyrics  were taken and interoperated in my own view, but I also did research on why the band wrote this song. It was in fact due to a shooting at a school in American and it was from this I got my idea. Finally this relation to the lyrics and their meaning, joint with the meaning behind the illustration idea, gave the lyrics a more pragmatic meaning, yet with a twisted mix.

Final Piece - Count Bodies Like Sheep

Below is my final piece for the song " Count Bodies Like Sheep " This page is apart of a double page spread which consists of another set of song lyrics. In the Perfect Circle song previous planning allowed me to choose the best section of lyrics for this illustration. The idea I chose for this section of lyrics was a ram and a sheep standing outside a window whilst a young girl stands inside, I also gave it a poetic twist. Using a monochromatic colour scheme for all of my illustration apart form the 'blood' splatters, it gave a stylized look to my illustration.

The lyrics " Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window Go back to sleep " were taken and it was from this I chose the idea for my illustration. The idea was for there there to be a young girl standing in a window whilst these 'demons' told her to go back to sleep. It also played on the idea that you're safe at home but outside in the vase world there are many scary creatures, this lends itself to my brief. Finally this relation to the lyrics and their meaning, joint with the meaning behind the illustration idea, and gave the lyrics an interesting yet twisted meaning.

Final Piece - Dance With The Devil

Below is my final piece for the song " Dance With The Devil " This page is apart of a double page spread which consists of another set of song lyrics. In the Breaking Benjamin song which can be found here, previous planning allowed me to choose the best section of lyrics for this illustration. The idea I chose for this section of lyrics was based on a prey and predator theme, and gave it a poetic twist. Using a monochromatic colour scheme for all of my illustration apart form the 'blood' drips, it gave a stylized look to my illustration. This stylization added to the course brief I was given, that being Truth, Fantasy and Fiction.

The fiction and truth brief came through with the lyrics and the illustration I did. The lyrics being " Say goodbye as you dance with the devil tonight " This initially gave a dark and twisted meaning to the lyrics when I illustrated a hare dancing with a fox. Finally this relation to the lyrics and their meaning, joint with the meaning behind the illustration idea, and gave the lyrics an interesting yet twisted meaning.

Work In Progress - Final Piece Photoshop

Once the drawing aspects of my lyrics book had been done I then went to scan in my drawings onto my laptop. Once the scanning process was complete, I started to move everything into Photoshop. Grabbing one of the brush strokes from my sketchbook sheet and dragging it onto a new document. This brush stroke was darkened slightly and the levels where changes on that specific layer before I began duplicating it. I duplicated the single brush stroke several times to archive the pattern you can see in the screenshot below.

Once background layer was finished. I started by dragging and dropping ink droplets onto my new document in Photoshop. Once this was completed I changed the colour of the ink droplets from black to white and placed them in the bottom right-hand corner of my document. The ink droplet layer was then placed above the background layer, if this was not done you wouldn't be able to see the new layer. I also took a brush stroke from my sketchbook and placed it onto the Photoshop document above the background and the ink droplets and turned the hue from black to white. I then drag the brush stroke to the corners and edges of my document, this in turn created a border effect.

I then opened my previously made illustration in Photoshop and removed the background. Once this was complete I dragged and dropped the illustrated ontop of my background layer. I changed the levels and saturation of the illustration in order to make the tones match with the rest of the image. Once this was complete, I took another brush stroke from my sketchbook, turned it white and placed at at the top of my document. This is where I will put the song lyrics.

Finally I took some ink droplets which I'd purposely let run down my sketchbook page and turned them from black to red. This effect was to give my illustrated lyrics some more meaning and concept. As the lyrics mention " say goodbye as you dance with the devil tonight " the illustration emplies predator and prey dancing together. The 'blood' effect was added over the prey animal in order to demonstrate the danger in its actions.

Once again this process was the same for all my Illustrations and their creation process and editing in Photoshop.

Work In Progress - Final Piece Illustrations

To start creating my Final Pieces I firstly began by creating different brush strokes and different paint splatters in my sketchbook. These pages where then scanning onto my laptop and saved into a folder ready for use.

After the basic brush strokes had been made I started by creating my Illustrations. These were done by firstly starting with a sketch and then proceeding onto doing the line work for each element of drawing.
Once I had started creating the basic outlines for most of the drawing, I continued using the dip pen to do the more detailed parts of each sections. This process took me about five to six hours for each drawings. The fine individual lines which make up the cross-hatch shading within my illustrations proved to be the most time consuming and most challenging aspect. I did this style of drawing, to keep in sync with the Edward Gorey and John Kenn case study I wrote. It turn it allowed me to keep the same type of 'twisted' nature whilst also developing my own style within this category of Illustration.

As you can see from the screenshot below the amount of detail within each section of the drawing is starting to take shape and add interesting effects.

Below you'll see all my final drawings I created to make my final piece. The process for each of these drawings were the exact same and each took several hours to complete. In addition to drawing these I also used a light pad in order to help identify where the light and dark sections of the drawing needed to be. With the added light from behind the illustration it allowed me to get a better perspective of what it looked like when I added shading.

The first Illustration will be for my ' Count Bodies Like Sheep ' lyrics, the second will be for my ' Ten Thousand Fists ' Lyrics, the third will be for my ' Youth Of The Nation ' lyrics, and the forth will be for my ' Dance With The Devil ' lyrics. I have also contained the illustration which will make up my front and back cover.
